Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1973 on the borders of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is part of the famed Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, with parts of Bandipur and Mudimalai sanctuaries forming the core of the reserve. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was created with the aim of protecting this fragile ecosystem, which is one of the biodiversity hotspots in the world. The region is also known for its historical significance, as it was one of the strongholds of Raja Pazhassi who resisted British attempts to colonize the state.

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses a series of small hillocks with the highest point at Karottimala measuring 1158 meters in height. The rainy months from June to August are a rejuvenating time for the forest flora and fauna after the hot tropical sunshine of the summer months. The lush deciduous and semi evergreen forests of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary receive life-giving water during this time and the visitor will be able to see new green leaves sprouting on every branch.

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for animals owing to its green foliage cover and moderate rainfall. The bigger mammals include tigers, elephants, leopards, wildcats, civets, bear and bison. The carnivores prey on the ample deer population, which includes species like barking deer and mouse deer. The moist crevices are a haven for snakes and monitor lizards. The bird population at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary includes peacock, the magnificent bird that heralds the monsoon by spreading its splendid turquoise plumes. Other birds include clear-throated warblers, cuckoo and night hunters owl.

If you are going to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in order to catch a glimpse of the tigers of the sanctuary, you will not be disappointed. Tiger population in the sanctuary has soared in the years following the implementation of the project tiger scheme, so you will in all probability come across these majestic creatures in the course of your jeep tours.
