Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary

Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary

The Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary was established in 1983 on the initiative of Dr. Salim Ali, the renowned ornithologist. The sanctuary lies 13 kilometers away from Kodamangalam, and 70 kilometers from Kochi. Till date, over 250 kinds of birds and many other kinds of animals have been identified in the sanctuary. The many kinds of migratory and indigenous birds gathered at a single point makes Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary an ornithologist's dream-come-true. The 25 square kilometers, though small by the standards of India's National Parks and Sanctuaries, is packed with wonderful kinds of birds, startling in their many hues, or the many butterflies dancing in a sunlit patch of the forest.

The topography consists of mainly hilly terrain, with the highest point at the Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary being the 523 meters high Njayapilli Peak. The Bhoothanthakett Dam has created a lake that is home to many freshwater fishes, while the shores shelter water birds. The tropical, semi tropical and deciduous forests of the Park also shelter many kinds of arboreal birds, each existing in perfect harmony with the other in its sound ecological niche.

The tall teak, rosewood and Venga trees at the Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary, interspersed with clumps of the sweet smelling Bhadraksham, Kanal and Kamabacom. The animals at the Sanctuary include elephants, leopards, porcupines and snakes. The visitors should however keep in mind that the elephants visit the Sanctuary from neighboring forests only in certain seasons.

The birds at the Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary are of course the most popular inhabitants of the lush forests and grasslands. On your Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary Tour, you will come across Indian roller, Malabar trogon, snipe, nightjar, pheasant, sparrow, gray fowl, and hornbill. The sweet trilling voice of the cuckoo echoes clear in the forest as you try to concentrate on the call of the Indian myna.

The Thatekkad Bird Sanctuary is also a shelter for many rare birds like crimson-throated barbet, night heron, black kite, gray-headed eagle and sunbirds. The delightfully named Fairy Bluebird charms you with its bright colors and sweet hum.
