Silent Valley National Park

Silent Valley National Park

The Silent Valley National Park covers 90 square kilometers in the magnificent rainforest area of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is located 30 kilometers from the picturesque backwater town of Manakkad. True to its name, the Silent Valley National Park is pristine in its absence of human sounds and inaccessibility, as the rough territory restricts access to this Park. However, the persevering visitor is rewarded by the sight of an unbroken line of forests and unpolluted rivers and lakes. The forest is characterized by deep gorges, the magnificent blue tinged Nilgiri slopes and the sweet gushing sounds of the river Kunthi.

The Silent Valley National Park is home to many rare and endangered plants, like orchids, legumes and asters of different varieties. In addition, newer species of plants are constantly being discovered in the mysterious reaches of the forests; so the visitor should always keep in mind that he stepping into largely unexplored territory.

The Park is also home many kinds of animals typical of the Deccan Plateau area. The langurs, macaques, and sloth bear find security in the uppermost branches of the tall, dense trees shading the forest floor. The Park is also home to larger predators like tigers, panthers, civet cats and wild boar. The other denizens of the Park include mongoose, porcupine, deer (sambar, spotted, barking) and the unusual pangolin, or scaly anteater.

The avian population at the Silent Valley National Park is constituted of hawk eagles, falcons, owls, hornbills, thrush, bittern and Sri Lankan frogmouths. The Park also plays hosts to around 30 migrant bird species every year. Apart from birds, many kinds of butterflies also lend color and vibrancy to the atmosphere.

The Silent Valley National Park is one of the more unexplored National Parks of India. it is true that in the last century, there has been increased human interference in the area, yet this is still one of the most pristine tropical rainforest zones in the country.
