Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is centered around the Peppara Dam spanning the Karamana River. The catchment area of the Dam was declared a protected site in 1983, after which the wildlife at the place soared in number. The sanctuary lies 50 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary consists of 50 square kilometers of tropical, semi tropical, evergreen and deciduous forests spread over an area covering hilly and marshy terrain. The flora of the sanctuary varies from tropical evergreen in the higher slopes to deciduous forests growing in the marshy foothills.
The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is home to animals like tiger, panther, elephants, wild boar, gaur and dhole. The deer species found here include sambar, mouse deer and barking deer. The abundance of prey has seen the predator population of the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary shoot up in recent times. The higher reaches of the trees at the sanctuary shelter macaques, langurs and Malabar squirrel.
The reservoir at the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for fish, and the water birds that prey on them. The birds include cormorants, darters, egrets and kingfishers. The swamps of the lower hill slopes are ideal for King Cobras and pythons. The Sanctuary is home to many kinds of colorful insects, including butterflies and moths.
A trip to the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary leaves one mesmerized with sheer beauty of the lush forests, changing in type as you ascend the hill slopes. Add to it the many kinds of wildlife that you will spot on your trip, and the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary seems to be an ideal spot for vacationing with your family. Be in close communion with nature as you rise to birdcalls and the many sounds of the forest waking up at the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary.
