Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary

The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Western Ghats hill ranges bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala states. The sanctuary is spread over 285 square kilometers, covering forests of timber wood like teak, rosewood etc. the river Chalakudi flows through the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary .In fact, the forests ecosystem was threatened by the massive felling of teak wood for industry in the 1920s, before the area was declared a protected area. After the 1960s, when the area was formally declared a wildlife sanctuary, teak has been replanted on a large scale, leading to invigoration of the forests.

One of the main attractions of the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is the giant teak tree measuring 40 meters in length and over 6 meters in girth. Another feature of the Park is the 1444 meters tall Karimala Gopuram. The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary has three dams that have given rise to artificial lakes. The lakes and the river flowing through the sanctuary feed the evergreen, semi evergreen, deciduous forests and bamboo groves.

The animals at the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary include Tiger, leopard, wildcat, Bonnet macaque, langur, slender Loris, bear, barking deer, wild boar, and the rare Nilgiri Tahr, a peculiar animal with a long snout. The tigers at the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary are rather shy, so you may have some difficulty spotting them. The reed around the lake shelters darters, cormorants, and storks as they stalk the fish or other aquatic creatures of the lake.

The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is home to reptiles, including crocodiles, lizards, chameleons, turtles and fish like terrapin, noori, mooshu and taral. The snakes at the sanctuary include species like King Cobra, python, krait, rat snake and viper.

The abundance of flora and fauna, as well as the fact that the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is well protected under the Project Tiger scheme, makes it a must see. Take a jeep ride in the vicinity of the many reservoirs at the sanctuary and get acquainted with many kinds of exotic birds and animals peculiar to these parts.
