Wildlife in Kerala

Wildlife in Kerala The green coconut groves, calm lagoons and the lush banana plantations of Kerala are the stuff dreams are made of. However, God's Own country is also famous for its wildlife sanctuaries. The Nilgiri Ranges, the mythical abode of the Gods, is also abundant in lush forests, home to the most exotic plants, rare animals and endangered birds. Each wildlife park and sanctuary has a distinct charm of its own, a particular atmosphere spawned by its sylvan forests, rustling reed bushes, gurgling brooks and clumps of trees.

The Periyar National Park, one of the best-maintained wildlife sanctuaries in India, lies amidst the lush forests of the Western Ghats in Kerala, close to Kottayam, the nearest railhead. The park is known for its wild elephant population, though the lucky visitor may also get to see a few tigers. The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is centered around the Peppara Dam spanning the Karamana River. The catchment area of the Dam was declared a protected site in 1983, after which the wildlife at the place soared in number. The sanctuary lies 50 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.

The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Western Ghats hill ranges bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala states. The sanctuary is spread over 285 square kilometers, covering forests of timber wood like teak, rosewood etc. the river Chalakudi flows through the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary. One of the main attractions of the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is the giant teak tree measuring 40 meters in length and over 6 meters in girth. The Silent Valley National Park covers 90 square kilometers in the magnificent rainforest area of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is located 30 kilometers from the picturesque backwater town of Manakkad.

The Thattekad Bird sanctuary, patronized by late Dr. Salim Ali, has over 250 bird species, while the shola forests of the Eravikulam National Park is one of the most unique features of the Park, with clumps of these tall reeds being dense enough to hide tigers and leopards.
