Mehrangarh Fort
Perched atop a 125-meter high hill, the Mehrangarh Fort overlooks the regal city of Jodhpur. This grand fort was built in 1459 AD and covers an entire area of 5 km. The construction of the Mehrangarh Fort was started by Rao Jodha but it was only during the reign of Maharaja Jaswant Singh that the fort saw its completion.
In spite of its grand presence and difficult accessibility, the Mehrangarh Fort did have its share of troubles. For instance, it was once taken over by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who turned it into a military bastion. However, Ajit Singh, the son of Jaswant Singh regained it after a long struggle and restored it to its former glory.
The Mehrangarh Fort may look rough and worn out on the exterior, but its beautiful interiors springs up many a surprise for its visitors. You will indeed be amazed to discover numerous palaces, well laid gardens and temples within the Fort. The exquisite Moti Mahal deserves a special mention with its stained glasswork and wonderfully carved stone screens. The Chandan Mahal, Rang Mahal and the Darbar Takhat add up as some of the other attractions of the Mehrangarh Fort.
The Mehrangarh Fort boasts of 7 elegantly carved gates that speak a lot about their creator's artistic genius. The fort also offers an excellent display of royal artifacts and other paraphernalia. Besides, you should not forget to treat yourself to some fantastic views of the Jodhpur city from the fort's ramparts that are sure to add up to a breathtaking experience.
