Lohagarh Fort
The Lohagarh Fort or the "Iron Fort" was built somewhere during the early 18th century and has truly lived up to its name by withstanding many an attack in the entire course of its history. It was built by Maharaja Suraj Mal and has always boasted of its impregnable defenses that were inspired by a description given in the Ramayana. In fact, the fort was designed in such a way that everyone who tried to lay a siege on it had to withdraw after a point of time.
Since the Lohagarh Fort was meant to be a military structure, it is quite simple and basic in its architecture. Nevertheless, the fort does offer some interesting structures like the Kishori Mahal, Moti Mahal, Mahal Khas and the Kothi Khas. At the Lohagarh Fort, you will also come across the Jawahar Burj and the Fateh Burj. These victory towers were built by Maharaja Suraj Mal to commemorate the victories over the Mughals and British.
The Lohagarh Fort also boasts of a massive gateway adorned with paintings of huge elephants, the Ashtadhatu (eight metal). As you step into the fort complex, you can easily discern an unmistakable aura of strength and elegance that suddenly accosts you. It is indeed a wonderful experience to revel in the romantic appeal of the Lohagarh Fort that knows no bounds. Besides, the fort is surrounded by a moat that was always filled with water to ward of any surprise attack launched by its enemies. The sand battlements of the Lohagarh Fort further strengthened its impregnable defenses that frustrated many.
