History of Jaipur
The history of Jaipur began with a seed of an idea that germinated in Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh's mind as this great ruler decided to extend his capital from Amber that was too small to accommodate its growing population.
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh was a descendant of Kacchawa Rajputs who trace their descent back to Dhula Rai who is credited with the establishment of the first Kacchawa capital in 1128 A.D. Kacchawa Rajputs believe that they are descendants of Kush, the son of the Hindu mythological deity Lord Rama, who is mentioned in the great Indian Epic, Ramayana.
Established in the 18th century, Jaipur echoes with tales of valor, courage and spirit. Set on a piece of land chaperoned by three massive fortresses perched on sandstone hills, Jaipur is a royal desert paradise with ethnic buildings, havelis and forts painted in shades of pink.
Referred to as the 'Pink City' of Rajasthan India, Jaipur has a history that resembles a magically colored palate with hues of crafts, culture, old ways, regal politics, wars and love sagas. Jaipur was the first city in India that was carefully planned by a commissioned architect, Vidhyadhar Bhattcharya, a noted architect of those times. Jaipur was modeled under the guidance of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singhji and traditional principles of Shilpa Shastra.
The old Jaipur city that was originally designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya is enclosed by a massive wall with seven imposing gateways. The rulers of Jaipur entered into treaties with Mughal rulers, later Jaipur had its tryst with British colonial rule. When India became independent in 1947, Jaipur continued to be the capital of fascinating Rajasthan India.
