History of Agra

The history of Agra is a palate of romantic tales, political intrigues and cultural treasures.

Mentioned as Agraban in ancient Hindu scriptures, Agra enamors you with its brilliant history. The earliest history records available on Agra indicate that this region was a part of Surasena Empire. It was Sultan Sikander Lodhi who set up capital in Agra in the 16th century and attracted the attention of other rulers who began dreaming of making Agra their bastion. In the later years, Babar, the Mughal Emperor established his stronghold over Agra in Uttar Pradesh India.

Agra reached its zenith in terms of cultural glory, architectural wonder and folk splendor during the rule of Emperors Akbar and Shah Jahan. The colossal Agra Fort is a beauty in red sandstone that reflects Mughal might. Agra was at its cultural best during the reign of Mughal scion Shah Jahan who among other treasures conceived and erected Taj Mahal - a dream monument and befitting dedication to everlasting devotion.

More than 20, 000 workers worked consistently for a period of 20 years to give shape to the Taj - a lyrical love monument fashioned in pure marble, studded with precious and semi-precious stones. There are several legends and myths associated with Agra and Taj Mahal, though most of them in all probability have no historical basis.

The history of Agra is the history of heart wrenching love felt by Shah Jahan for his beloved Mumtaz Mahal that found shape in the glorious Taj Mahal. History records indicate that Aurangzeb, the next successor imprisoned Shah Jahan at the Agra Fort, where the emperor spend his last days gazing at the Taj sitting pretty on the banks of River Yamuna.

Once Aurangzeb died Agra had a political stint with Jats and Marathas before British colonial rulers came into the picture. In the post independence period, Agra became a part of Uttar Pradesh India.
